Includes correspondence, 1868-1901, of George Washington Anderson (merchant of Richmond, Va.). The largest portion of letters were written by G.W. Anderson while traveling accross county to the West Coast in 1887. Letters are written to sons Charles and James in Richmond, Va., and describe social activities, sights and economic development in St. Paul, Minn. (while visiting son George Jordan Anderson and family and including mention of a visit with Cardinal Gibbons), Tacoma, Wash., Portland, Ore. (including reference to the city's large Chinese population), San Francisco, Calif. (including a long description of the city's beauty and commercial appeal), Salt Lake City, Utah (including comments on Mormanism), and Denver, Col. Anderson also comments at length on railroad travel (in particular the spectacular western landscape) and travel aboard the steamship "Oregon" off the coast of California. Also, include correspondence, 1881-1916, of James Harper Anderson (of Richmond, Va.) chiefly with his second wife, Eleanor Bowles (Armistead) Anderson (of Richmond, Va., and while in Roanoke and Upperville, Va., Little Rock, Ark., Henderson, N.C., Philadelphia, Pa., and Washington, D.C., written prior to their marriage, discussing her social life, their courtship, and her nursing work), and brother George Jordan Anderson (in St. Paul, Minn. and Hamilton, N.D., discussing his family life and referring to the integrated public schools in St. Paul). Also, include letters, 1921-1923, written to Eleanor Bowles (Armistead) Anderson (of Richmond, Va.), including letters of condolence from female friends following the death of her husband, James Harper Anderson, in 1923.
